How do I cut video on the beat of music in Premiere or Resolve?
To cut on the beat, calculate the number of video frames per musical beat: (60 ÷ BPM) × FPS. For example, at 120 BPM and 24 fps, each beat lasts 12 frames (0.5 seconds). Cutting your clips at intervals of 12, 24, or 48 frames will synchronize your visual edits naturally with the tempo.
What happens if a beat doesn't divide evenly into frames?
Most tempo and frame rate combinations produce fractional frames (e.g. 128 BPM at 24 fps is 11.25 frames per beat). Over time, cutting on pure rounded integers creates rhythmic drift. To compensate, alternate clip lengths between adjacent integers (e.g., three 11-frame cuts followed by one 12-frame cut) or cut on 2-bar and 4-bar phrases where drift is minimized.
